EDGECOMBE AND CHARLES MEDAL AT CARIFTA GAMES

As at the end of the first day, Saturday, April 23, of the 40th Carifta Games in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Antigua/Barbuda Track & Field team, so far, has failed to live up to expectations.

Antigua/Barbuda team is made up of Cejhae Greene, Tahir Walsh, Jared Javis, Viani Joseph, Matthew Mitchell, Afia Charles, Stephon Sansculotte, Kasheem Colbourne, Jess St. John and Mark Phillip. The team is accompanied by President of the Antigua & Barbuda Amateur Athletic Association and Coaches Everton Cornelius and Heather Samuel.

On the Opening Day, Cejhae Greene and Tahir Walsh narrowly missed out of qualifying for the 100 Meters Boys U-17 and U-20, respectively. Greene placed 9th in the Preliminary Heats in a time of 11.12 sec. Walsh also placed 9th, but in the Boys U-20 in a time of 10.82 sec. Jared Jarvis came in 10th in the U-20 Boys 100M.

The Boys U-17 was won by Delano Davis of the Bahamas in 10.75, and Jazeel Murphy of Jamaica won the U-20 Boys in 10.27 seconds.

Meanwhile, living up to her word in “aiming high for the goal,” Edlyn Edgecombe fell two steps to take the Bronze in the Girls U-20 Shot Put with a distance of 12.93 Meters. The Shot Put was won by Laurianne Laurendot of Guadeloupe with 13.80 Meters. Kellion Knibb of Jamaica was third with 13.79 Meters.

The other medalist, on Saturday was Afia Charles, attending the University of Central Florida, who clocked 54.23 to emerge 3rd in the 400 Meters Girls U-20 Finals. Charles previously clocked 54.99 in the Heats. Olivia James of Jamaica won that event in 52.64 sec.

Other results for Antigua/Barbuda were Viani Joseph 11th overall in the 400 Meters Girls U-17 Preliminary round; Matthew Mitchell 12th in the Boys U-17 400 Meters; Kasheem Colbourne 11th and Stephon Stansculotte in the Boys U-20 400 Meters.

Better results are expected by Antigua/Barbuda in Sunday and Monday Events: Matthew Mitchell in the Boys U-17 200 & 800 Meters, Jess St. John—Girls U-17 Javelin, Cassie Vitalis—3000 Meters Girls Open, Viani Joseph—200 Meters Girls U-17, Tahir Walsh and Jared Jarvis—200 Meters Boys U-20.

ECAB donates to Sir Reginald Samuel Classic

The Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank (ECAB) has, last week, come out in support of the 3rd Annual Sir Reginald Samuel Track & Field Classic, scheduled for May 6—8, 2011 at
YASCO.

According to Corporate & Client Relations Manager of ECAB, Mrs. Sonya Carter, “ECAB’s primary focus is in the area of sports, health, education, the arts and culture and the community, with the greater emphasis being placed on educational initiative and youth. Staff members are encouraged
to volunteer their time and talent.” The donation has come at a time when finance to host the Meet is still much needed.

The CPTSA takes this opportunity in thanking ECAB which has come forward at a late request in donating to the Athletic Event.

Other Companies which have, so far, provided sponsorship are State Insurance Corporation, Hutchinson (Antigua)Ltd., Ministry of Sports and Subway.
