AUA SICKLE CELL ASSOCIATION TO BUILD NATIONAL ASSOCIATION

The AUA Sickle Cell Association was a major contributor to the two-day National Conference on Sickle Cell which was hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Sickle Cell Association at the Nurses Association Building under the theme “Hoping for a Brighter Future; Living Longer, Managing Sickle Cell”.

Conference presenters included former Faculty Member and Founder of the AUA Sickle Cell Association Dr. Regina Vincent Clark, several local and regional high level professionals including medical doctors, insurance brokers and a nutritionist. The AUA College of Medicine student body was also well represented by husband and wife team Amisha and Avinash Oza who gave a preliminary presentation on their research work on the incidence and prevalence of Sickle Cell in Antigua and Barbuda. AUA College of Medicine Faculty Mr. Vernon Solomon, Director of Emergency Medical Training Department and Dr. Elias B. Jackson, Assistant Professor, Physiology respectively, served as Moderators for the first two sessions of the Conference on its opening day, October 18, 2013.
 
Faculty Advisor for the AUA Sickle Cell Association, Dr. Shari Jackson who was also in attendance at the two day conference commended the national association for hosting an excellent event which was characterized by presentations which she described as being interesting, timely, relevant and meaningful for the large number of participants in attendance.

Dr. Jackson who is also an Assistant Professor, Clinical Medicine at the University applauded the Ozas for being excellent ambassadors of the AUA College of Medicine and commended them for their diligence and hard work to date in conducting the research. She further stated that the final report once released is expected to assist the local authorities in making informed decisions on the way forward for addressing the sickle cell disease on a national level.
 
When asked about the future work of the AUA Sickle Cell Association, Dr. Jackson shared that the organization was already working on sourcing a grant to strengthen the capabilities of the local association to conduct testing of high risk persons and or communities as well as to provide a broader range of treatment and support services for sickle cell patients.
