BARBUDA HEALTH DAY A SUCCESS!
Wednesday 17th April 2013

(AUA Faculty, Community Development Staff, and the local physician come together in observance of Barbuda Health Day)

The Community Development Division in the Ministry of Health, Social Transformation, and Consumer Affair, hosted a Barbuda Health Day on Saturday the 6th of April.  As part of the day’s events, four faculty members from the American University of Antigua (AUA) School of Medicine presented a panel discussion covering health topics relevant for the people of Barbuda.  Mrs. Brenda Thomas Odlum, Director of Community Development, publically thanked the AUA team for their efforts to educate the people and promote healthy lifestyles in Barbuda.   The panel presentations were well received by the audience and broadcast to the over 1500 Barbuda residents on the Abundant Life in Barbuda television station.

The Barbuda Health Day program began with opening statements by Mrs. Brenda Thomas Odlum and Dr. Angela Adams, AUA’s Community Outreach Coordinator. The first presentation was a talk on hypertension by Dr. Bhaskar Sarvesh, a physician with a background in patient care and Quality Assurance. Next, Dr. Yogin Parikh, a board certified surgeon from the USA, discussed heart disease highlighting the difference between good and bad cholesterol and providing strategies to promote heart health. A specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Sudah Kannavar provided an overview of diabetes that covered prevention, diagnosis, and living with the disease.  While discussing healthy lifestyles, Dr. Angela Adams, a Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified Coach, shared videos on men’s health, prostate health, and nutrition. As part of AUA’s Heart Smart Initiative, participants were encouraged to make healthy lifestyle choices and given AUA’s 100 Mile Challenge T-shirts and journals, as well as literature on heart health and diabetes.

In addition to an opportunity to share health information, Community Development’s Barbuda Health Day included recognition of Community Development staff who advocate tirelessly for the needs of the disabled in Antigua and Barbuda.  The highlight of the ceremony was awarding wheelchairs to two Barbudan children.  The excitement of the children and the gratitude of their parents provided a very moving end to the day’s formal proceedings.

(AUA Physicians tour Hanna Thomas Hospital)

Following a dialogue between AUA physicians and local health care providers, AUA faculty and Community Development staff ended Barbuda Health Day with a guided tour of the Hanna Thomas Hospital.  As the day drew to a close, Mrs. Thomas Odlum declared Barbuda Health Day a resounding success.
