ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS TO REPLACE STYROFOAM
Thursday 8th June 2017

The public consultation/open house on the Styrofoam Ban which was held by the Ministry of Health & The Environment Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 saw over 200 persons in attendance.

Some of the main topics discussed were composting of waste materials, the health and environmental dangers of styrofoam, the alternative products and cost involved.

At the meeting, the Minister of Health & The Environment Antigua and Barbuda, the Hon. Molwyn Joseph stated that the biodegradable alternative products can be imported tax free, this means the cost of these environmentally friendly products will not differ much from the price of using Styrofoam.

The 1st stage of the ban on the importation and use of styrofoam products starts on July 1st, 2017 and ends on December 31st, 2017.

Stage One importation ban applies to food service containers (clamshells, hinge containers, hot dog containers, bowls, plates and hot and cold beverage cups). There will be a six month interval - July 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2017 for the depletion of stock on hand.

Some of the alternative products on display at the public consultation/open house.
