ANTIGUA WELCOMES THE LARGEST CRUISE SHIP
Friday 15th January 2016

(St. John’s Antigua; January 14th 2016), What was seen as a historic moment was registered in the Antiguan Cruise Sector when the Norwegian Breakaway vessel docked at the Nevis Street Pier yesterday (Wednesday).

Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Asot A. Michael, alongside other top officials within the Tourism Sector welcomed the captain and crew of the vessel to the shores of Antigua and Barbuda during an inaugural plaque exchange ceremony on board.

According to the Hon. Tourism Minister, “The Norwegian Breakaway is truly a landmark vessel in the cruise industry – with the capacity of almost 4,000 passengers, with the additional 1,650 crew members…that is 5,650 visitors to our lovely island in one day!”

Minister Michael sees the addition of Antigua to the Norwegian Breakaway’s itinerary as a firm commitment that the Norwegian Cruise Line has endorsed the destination as one that can provide its guests with a first class shore experience that will enhance their overall cruise experience.

The vessel is over 1,000 feet long. Inaugurated in 2013, the Norwegian Breakaway has been endowed with such honors as Best Cruise for Families, Best Cruise Ship for Entertainment, Best Specialty Restaurants, Best New Ship, Best Rookie Cruise Ship, top 10 Spas on a Cruise and Best Large Cruise Line in the World.

In recognition of the importance of the arrival of such a vessel to Antigua in the face of fierce regional competition, Minister Michael re-iterated his appreciation by highlighting government’s commitment to enhancing the overall Cruise Tourism Product offered in the twin island state. “As part of our promise to improve services on island, our Government has taken steps to ensure we’re providing the most desirable product possible to visitors and residents. We aim to become the port-of-call of choice for those travelling to the Caribbean from around the world. A total transformation of the port facilities and downtown St. John’s will ensure that we once again regain our former status as a “marquee” destination in the cruise tourism industry”, the Tourism Minister noted.

The Inaugural visit of the Norwegian Breakaway is the country’s first commemoration ceremony for the year 2016.
