ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA PLANTING TREES OF LOVE
Tuesday 20th July 2010

Antigua and Barbuda added a Celebrity Tree Planting component to their Romance Month promotions with actor Malik Yoba, singer-songwriter, actress and author Faith Evans and rhythm and blues singer Ginuwine all participating.

Following exhilarating performances in the twin islands’ Love is All We Need concerts, both Evans and Ginuwine, who are passionate about youth development and environmental preservation, traveled to the island of Barbuda to plant a mahogany tree at the Holy Trinity Primary School. Joined by Senator, the Honorable McKenzie Frank, both artistes said they were pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in the “Planting Trees of Love” initiative. The tree planting is one effort by the tourism sector to support the environment while promoting the islands as romance destinations.

Yoba chose to plant a cashew tree on the island of Antigua at Body Pond which is a part of the climate change project coordinated by the Sandals Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Environment Division.

June, known as Romance Month in Antigua, the Romance Capital of the Caribbean, helps couples keep the passion burning with special deals and romance packages at select hotels. Sandals Grande Antigua has consistently been voted “Most Romantic Resort in the World” for more than ten years. With the ability to facilitate same day weddings, since there is no residency requirement, there are no delays in exchanging vows in this hot spot and now, through their performances and by the special planting of trees, celebrities have become messengers of love and are helping to spread the destination’s theme -- love, peace and unity.

US Director of Tourism, Derede Samuel-Whitlock, who accompanied the group advised that “the celebrities participating in our Romance Month promotion indicated their willingness to participate in Planting Trees of Love to also commemorate their visit ”.

The Romance Month promotions, launched in 2006, are designed to give visitors and residents a chance to "feel the love" of the destination and combine all of the entertainment elements that keep romance alive to promote the destination as one of the most romantic hot spots in the Caribbean.
