TOURISM TRAINING FOR OWNERS AND MANAGERS OF SMALL HOTEL SECTOR
Thursday 29th August 2013

The Ministry of Tourism in partnership with the Organization of American States (OAS) will host a 2-day specialised training programme for Owners and Managers of Small Hotels, September 4th and 5th (2013) at the Trade Winds Hotel. The national workshop is part of OAS’ continuing support for small hotels both at regional and local levels, as well as for public officials in the tourism sector with responsibility for supporting the small hotel sub-sector.

The training will be conducted under the tagline: Achieving Service and Business Excellence and will focus on addressing the priorities identified by small hoteliers at the OAS First FORUM for Caribbean Small Hotels held in Antigua, July 2012.

The identified priority issues considered key factors for capacity building and for improved management and operations of small hotels will be addressed under the programme’s sub-topics - Training and Standards, on the first day and Branding and Marketing, on the second day. The goal is to foster sustainable development and growth of this accommodation sub-sector (small hotels), vital to the overall success of the nation’s tourist industry.

The Ministry anticipates that the workshop will provide the small hotel operators with tools for developing and implementing strategies to enable them to navigate and compete in an ever-increasing competitive global marketplace. It is also expected that it will expand and deepen the local conversation on the creation of an Antiguan and Barbudan service excellence brand for a distinct competitive advantage.

The OAS support is part of its Office of Tourism’s Sustainable Programme for 2013 under the auspices of the Small Tourism Enterprise Network (STEN) project funded by the Canadian International Agency (CIDA) and which focuses on improving productivity and competitiveness of small and medium tourism enterprises in the Caribbean.
