Romance Capital of the Caribbean, Antigua & Barbuda, will take centre stage next March, 2013 when it hosts a weekend of classic Jazz entertainment with the Naniki Jazz Safari.
The Naniki Jazz Safari is a new and unique cultural tourism event which fuses music and music education as an exceptional series of jazz events throughout the Caribbean region.
Director of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), Ms. Sylma Brown and Founder of the Naniki Jazz Safari, Mr. Tom Hinds launched the event to the US media in New York, USA. Antigua & Barbuda was represented by the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Office in New York by Director, Derede Samuel-Whitlock. The Jazz Safari will tour Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 2013.
The Antigua & Barbuda component of the Naniki Jazz Safari is scheduled to take place from Friday, March 1, 2013 to Sunday, March 3, 2013 beginning at the Grand Royal Antiguan Resort. CEO of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, Colin C. James noted, “The Naniki Jazz Safari is an ideal event to add to our local event calendar in Antigua & Barbuda and will allow us to showcase our island as the idyllic backdrop for the smooth rhythms and sultry sounds of jazz.”
This Naniki Jazz series is different because it allows visitors to be introduced to Caribbean region through each island participating in this unique cultural event. The word ‘Naniki’ comes from the Arawak word meaning “spirited” or “full of life.” Naniki has welcomed world renowned jazz icons such as Oscar Peterson, Frank Morgan, Monty Alexander, Carmen Lundy, Arturo Tappin, Raf Robertson and Andy Narell in the past.
Antigua & Barbuda is honored to host three days of events during this Jazz Safari with shows scheduled to take place at the Grand Royal Antiguan Resort and the famous Lookout at Shirley Heights in addition to music workshops conducted to introduce the youth of the twin-island destination to the genre of jazz by leading jazz musicians and enthusiasts.
