WARWICKSHIRE OVER-50 CRICKET TEAM VISITS ANTIGUA
Tuesday 13th November 2012

Antigua and Barbuda welcomes the Warwickshire over 50 cricket team from the 9th to the 23rd of November 2012 for a host of friendly matches with various local groups.

Fixtures have been set for various playing fields across the island against local teams such as the Antigua, Police, and Swete’s cricket Masters Teams as well as combined teams.

The Ministry of Tourism’s Sports Tourism department main organizer of the Warwickshire event has organized the key components of the group’s visit. Karen Joseph, chief officer within this department views this visit as yet another opportunity to build upon the work that the Ministry has been doing recently to grow the niche sports tourism sector.

So far we have had four teams for the year plus several groups on exhibition visits that will be bringing teams next year. Last month we had the manager of Essex County Mr. Paul Grayson who came on an exhibition tour and will be bringing his country team in February for a pre-season tour. Kent county is also enquiring about a March 2013 return,” says Ms. Joseph.
She continued that, “this augers well as a promotion mechanism for the country because the players are accompanied by their spouses and sometimes their children and once the experience is good overall (not just for the games), there is a likelihood that these visitors will go back to their respective countries and sell Antigua and all that it has to offer.”

The Warwickshire group of 31 will be visiting the sister Isles of Barbuda and Bird Island as well as numerous other sites in Antigua such as the Nelson’s Dockyard. The group will be hosted to a circumnavigation cruise sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism.
