Sir Vivian Richards is presented with an honorary membership from Weald Park Golf Club, Essex, England during a brief ceremony on Saturday, September 29.
The club’s owner, Andy Ferdinand, bestowed the honour on Sir Viv at the end of a day of golf involving the two International Pairs Caribbean teams of Sir Vivian Richards and Errol Samuel of Antigua and Barbuda and Adrian Norford of St. Kitts and Nevis and Max Raffoul of Dominica and members of the African Caribbean Golf Association (ACGA) before leaving for Scotland for the International Pairs World Finals.
And according to Zorol Barthley, CEO of Golf Experience Caribbean said that the day provided valuable practice for the Caribbean teams along with a great opportunity to socialise with members of the African Caribbean Golf Association.
An excited Ferdinand added that: "it was such a great pleasure to host the Caribbean teams, and to have Sit Viv at Weald Park is an absolute delight. And as a small token of his visit, we wish to offer him a golfing home whenever he is in the UK, and hereby confer him with an honorary membership."
Ferdinand, whose family originates from St Lucia, bought the Weald Park Golf Club two years ago and is the only black man in Europe to own a golf course.
A humbled Sir Viv thanked Ferdinand for his generosity and all who were involved in making this day a reality. He believes the course provided an ample test for the teams as they prepare to challenge 20 other teams at the International Pairs World Finals at Loch Lomond, Scotland from October 1 - 3; updated scores will be available at www.golffrontiers.com
