CARIBBEAN TO BE SHOWCASED AT THE INTERNATIONAL WORLD PAIRS FINAL Friday 28th September 2012
The participation of two Caribbean teams at the 2012 International Pairs World Finals al Loch Lomond, Scotland is an exciting thing for Caribbean Golf. As the Antiguan duo of Sir Vivian Richards and Errol Samuel, along with the Caribbean team of Adrian Norford of St Kitts and Max Raffoul of Dominica fine tune their game for what is bound to be the pinnacle of their golfing careers, the corporate and general support has also risen significantly.
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, The St Kitts Tourism Authority and Discover Dominica Authority are all using the fact that their players will be in Scotland as a natural synergy to attract destination branding. St Kitts’ Minister of Tourism, Ricky Skerritt considers Adrian Norford’s participation to be timely as “St Kiitts has a heavy emphasis on its golf tourism market. With one top class course currently in operation, and two others nearing completion, this is an opportunity for an exciting golfing talent to put our country on the international stage.”
The Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Sports is also absolutely delighted to be supporting this international representation, "we wish the team well on the course, and above all consider this a great opportunity to be true ambassadors of the sport and the country", opines the Jr. Minister of Sports, Senator Winston Williams.
Dominica does not have a golf course, but Director of Tourism at the Discover Dominica Authority, Colin Piper sees Max’s and Dominica’s participation in this event as an unexpected but timely fillip in showcasing all the other attributes of the nature isle, and specifically its eco-tourism thrust.
CEO of Golf Experience Caribbean, Zorol Barthley considers Sir Viv’s presence in the touring party as divine intervention, as it has escalated the regional and international interest in the event, as well as added expectations from the local sports loving public.
The National Olympic Committee of Antigua & Barbuda has continued to see the big picture about the nation’s involvement in events such as the International Pairs World Finals, and has once again provided tangible financial support. Its President, Senator Paul Chet Greene states, “at the NOC level we have began to focus on the Olympics in Rio 2016, where golf will debut, therefore international opportunities like these will help our golfers gain the confidence needed at the next level.”
“We are giving our teams the best chance of success and we will spend a few days acclimatising just outside London at the Weald Park Golf Club in Brentwood, Essex”, explains Barthley. “This is the only course in Europe owned by a black man, and it is natural that those networking opportunities will be utilised.”
“We have been fortunate with the kind of corporate support we have had; by extension one of our sponsors Johnnie Walker will greatly benefit from Sir Viv’s presence, as he is one of their brand ambassadors in their “Know Your Boundaries Series”, continues Barthley.
The two teams qualified to represent the region during the 4th annual INET International Pairs Caribbean Open at the Cedar Valley Golf Course in Antigua, played on September 7 – 8, 2012.
