RESTAURANT SERVERS CELEBRATED Tuesday 1st May 2012

At an event held last Thursday (April 26th, 2012), at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa, twenty-one (21) Restaurant Servers representing 10 properties across the island were acknowledged and applauded for having gained internationally-recognised certification from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute(AH&LEI). Each was presented with a certificate and lapel pin and now carry the designation, Certified Restaurant Server.
The celebratory event brought to a successful conclusion the Ministry of Tourism/Organization of American States (OAS) collaboration on a three-year Tourism Development Project, titled Capacity Building: Tourism Training and Certification. The project represented a planned intervention to improve the tourism human resource capacity of Antigua & Barbuda, thus fostering the development of a professional and skilled workforce for the tourism sector. Training activities undertaken throughout the project life engaged in excess of 250 tourism workers in the areas of Front Office, Food & Beverage, Guest Room Attendants, Training and Development and Small Hotels Management & Operations. Antigua & Barbuda’s tourism product now boasts scores of additional tourism workers certified in each of those respective areas.
At the event, the employees received congratulatory messages from Trainer/Facilitator of the Restaurant Servers’ Training Programme, Egbert Joseph, OAS representative based at its Antigua & Barbuda Office , Jean Ricot Dormeus, and Corthwright Marshall, Director of Policy & Planning, Ministry of Tourism. In stressing the renewed commitment of the OAS to supporting the government and citizens of Antigua & Barbuda, the representative Jean Dormeus applauded the success of the 21 Restaurant Servers and encouraged them to increase their performance through nurturing and giving that spirit of quality service, generosity and their demonstration of positive attitude, turning their knowledge and recently acquired skills into achieving that vision of excellence and progress.
Employee of Blue Waters Antigua, Pearl Jno Baptiste, National Awardee, Antigua & Barbuda 2011 Hotel Employee of the Year and recipient of the 2011 National Youth Award for Service Excellence, gave the response on behalf of the awardees, while Donald Lawrence of St. James’s Club delivered the Words of Appreciation. Representatives of the Management Staff of the participating properties – Jolly Beach Resort, Grand Pineapple Resort, Rex Resort properties, Oceanic View Exclusive Vacation Cottages, St. James’s Club, Verandah Resort & Spa, Blue Waters Antigua and Galley Bay Resort & Spa shared the moments of celebration.
The multinational three year project benefitted the countries of Antigua/Barbuda, Belize and St. Kitts-Nevis. The project was geared towards enhancing the quality of service within the countries’ tourism and hospitality industry through the provision of training so as to better equip the tourism labour force with the required knowledge and skills.
