Cricket-fans got more than they bargained for when images of carnival dancers and stilt-walkers, waving Antigua and Barbuda flags, swept across their television screens during a cricket match in the United Kingdom.

Over six thousand spectators at the county cricket grounds in Chelmsford along with those watching the match live on Sky Sports TV at home were treated to the sights and sounds of Antigua, during an “Antigua Day” organised by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority’s UK Office on July 2.

“Antigua and Barbuda got a tremendous amount of exposure from this event,” said UK Director of Tourism Hilary Modeste.  “During the 2011 cricket season, we will continue to use our historical ties with cricket to promote the destination in the UK, targeting those persons with the highest propensity to travel to the Caribbean.”

The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority team was supported at the event by a strong Antiguan and Barbudan delegation that included: The Antigua and Barbuda High Commissioner, His Excellency Dr. Carl Roberts and Mrs. Roberts, Members of the Antigua and Barbuda National Association as well as other Antiguans living in the UK who joined in creating the Antigua party cricket atmosphere.

Spectators were caught up in the atmosphere, posing for photos with the Carnival girls, and dancing to steelpan music provided by Antiguan band Sunjets.  Music selected specifically for the event by Antigua’s very own Chickie of Chickie’s Hi-fi, also blasted through speakers during the match.

Perry Norton, Sponsorship and Advertising Manager at the county grounds where the event was held said:  “It was an excellent day and went down wonderfully with our members and supporters. It really shows Antigua in a great light and hopefully will mean a few more reservations on the island!”

Amazing Antigua prizes were also up for grabs with the grand prize being seven nights for two at the exclusive St. James’s Club with flights provided by British Airways.

Chris Skinner danced away with this major prize.  “I came to a cricket match and now I’m going away with a holiday,” said the excited Skinner who could not wait to share the news with his other half, who would be “shocked”. This will not be Skinner’s first time to Antigua. He visited the island previously for a cricket test match, and to enjoy the tropical weather.

“Skinner fits into our target audience perfectly. He is an avid cricket fan, and travels to watch the sport, and we congratulate him on his win” said the UK Tourism Director.
