TOURISM CADETS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE INTERNSHIP
Monday 17th January 2011

Several Graduates of the 2010 Antigua Barbuda Tourism Cadet Corps Programme successfully completed internship at some of the islands most established hotels.

The students who currently attend the Antigua State College, Clare Hall Secondary School, Antigua Girls High School and the Ottos Comprehensive School came together last week to share and discuss their experiences.  For many, their one-week internship was extended to two weeks.

The internship took place during their vacation in December at which time the students were attached to CocoBay Resort, Carlisle Bay Resort, Halcyon Cove By Rex Resorts, Hawksbill by Rex Resorts, Galley Bay Resort & Spa, Jolly Beach Resort & Spa and Trade Winds Hotel.
The basic principle underlying the work experience is that the participating students are provided with an opportunity to learn through hands-on experience of the workings of the various departments within the hotel and to gain a better understanding of the importance of proper communication and customer service skills in the workplace.

The students expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity and thanks to the management and staff of the participating host hotels who ensured that they gave them a taste of work life within several departments to which they were assigned.  Interns spent time in more than one of the following areas including Front Office, Reservations, Housekeeping & Laundry, Accounts, Grounds & Maintenance, Kitchen & Dining Room.  They also spoke highly of their experiences and shared their feelings that they grew in confidence from day to day.

Heads of Departments and or staff assigned to mentor, coach and or direct the interns during their stint at the hotels, have showered high praise on them for their enthusiasm, interest shown and willingness to learn.  Special reference was made to their leadership abilities, communication skills and their professional growth over the period.

The Antigua Barbuda Tourism Cadet Corps forms part of the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism to give our youth an opportunity to learn about the tourist industry and to familiarize themselves with the country’s tourism product.  As part of the programme, the Internship gives an opportunity for the graduates to experience the real world of work through work attachments.
