Jonathan JB Gill of British pop sensation JLS arrived in Antigua on Christmas Eve for a one week vacation. JB who is one of the four member boy-band rose to fame in the UK after reaching the final of the 2008 series of The X-Factor. Since then the pop group has released 4 number one hit singles and two top-selling albums; one of which sold 1.3 million copies in the UK and Europe.
The group is in the middle of a UK tour but scheduled a ten day break in performances over the Christmas season. JB decided to use the opportunity to escape the unusually cold winter weather in the UK and reconnect with the second home of his youth. JB who is the grandson of Sir McChesney George was born in the UK but spent his pre-school years growing up in Barbuda.
“I’m so happy to be here in the sun. I intend to relax with family and do absolutely nothing. Antigua is perfect for that. It’s a great escape.” Said Gill.
Minister of State with responsibility for Culture, Honourable Eleston “Namba” Adams was at VC Bird International Airport to greet Mr. Gill when he arrived. “I am so pleased to meet this young man who is a son of the soil. The group JLS is extremely popular in the UK and Europe. They are gaining in popularity in the US too. I wanted to express on behalf of the Government and people of Antigua & Barbuda how proud we are of JB and his achievements. It is important to recognize and encourage our talented young people.” Said Minister Adams.
Gill often makes reference to Antigua & Barbuda in interviews especially when talking about his childhood. This has prompted the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority to begin discussions with Mr. Gill to capitalize on the exposure that his fame can provide the destination. “We are eager to work with JB wherever and whenever his busy schedule allows. The type of publicity JB affords the destination is immeasurable. JLS is the biggest pop sensation to hit the UK in years.” said Kimberley Bowers, Marketing Manager of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority.
During his one week stay in Antigua Mr. Gill will be paying courtesy calls on the Prime Minister Dr. Honourable Baldwin Spencer and Minister of Tourism, Honourable John Maginley. He will also visit the Children’s Ward at the Mount St, John’s Medical Centre.
