FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY & BACK-YARD GARDENING Friday 11th September 2015
The third in a series of workshops ahead of the Homes, Families and Gardens Festival competition was held on Thursday at the Christian Valley Agricultural Estate. About twenty individuals participated in a budding and grafting workshop facilitated by Supervisor Audrey Joseph, who has worked at the agricultural station for over 20 years.
Budding and grafting are techniques used to join parts from two or more plants so that they appear to grow as a single plant. The workshop was an initiative of the Community Development Division in the Ministry of Social Transformation and Human Resource Development.
A couple of other sessions were held previously on plant propagation and pest control, and landscaping.
Organisers have been pleased with the support given so far and encouraged other persons to be part of the next workshop on food and nutrition security and back-yard gardening to be held on September 22 at the Environment Division.
Meanwhile, registration has been ongoing for the Homes, Families and Gardens Festival competition, an undertaking by the Community Development Division now in its eighth year.
It is aimed at encouraging residents to beautify their surroundings and get involved in backyard gardening.
The Homes, Families and Gardens Festival competition has over the years generated quite some interest throughout the various communities including Barbuda. The deadline for submission of entries is September 30.
