CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE
Antigua gained total independence on November 1st 1981, when for the first time in 328 years the Union jack was lowered and replaced with the Antiguan Flag, and then the Antiguan National Anthem was sung.
The celebrations consists of a week of celebration, competitions, parades, expos and food fairs – for all Antiguans living both home and abroad and residents of Antigua, as well as visitors. A fantastic week of celebrations for all the family in both Antigua and Barbuda.
About two weeks before Independence Day local businesses, schools and government buildings will be decorated in the traditional and distinctive yellow and red check of the National Dress used for clothing, and as decoration with a yearly Heritage National Dress Day.
Whether Living, born in or visiting Antigua for the first time you will be sure to find something for all the family.
