ASW - 2016 LIAT SCHOOL'S ART COMPETITION RESULTS

The annual Antigua Sailing Week Schools' Art competition aims to encourage an interest in sailing and the environment among the young and future audience of Antigua Sailing Week.  This year’s competition was generously sponsored by LIAT, the Caribbean Airline. LIAT, The Caribbean Airline recently celebrated 60 years of service, connecting our region and connecting the people of the Caribbean and the ensuing  theme for the competition was based around our region connecting with the world via LIAT and the ocean.  

Judges of the competition, which was held at the Dockyard Museum on April 18th were: Nancy Nicholson of the Rhythm and Blues Gallery, Alan Scholl of LIAT, Mako Williams of iLab Global,  along with independent artists,  Nadine Gonnella, Denise Martin and Katie McConnachie.

An impressive 200 entries were judged on three criteria: interpretation of theme (execution of concept), uniqueness and artistry. Winners of  the contest were chosen from three age categories (5-8 years old; 9-13 years old; and 14-18 years old), and this year’s results are:

5 - 8 Age Category
1st Place – Joe Pybus (Island Academy)
2nd Place – Sierra Boyd (Island Academy)
3rd Place – Takera Joseph (Liberta Primary)

9 - 13 Age Category
1st place – Isabella Xie (St Nicholas Primary)
2nd Place – Tahron O Peters (Antigua Grammar School)
3rd Place – Donika Darragh (Island Academy)

14 - 18 Age Category
1st Place – Clare Christopher (St Anthony’s)
2nd Place – Adante Lake (Island Academy)
3rd Place – Ruthie Pierre- Louis (Christ The King High)

Honorable mentions include: Freya Gobat, Jadon Hadeed, Thomas Ritchie, Sadiq Chatham, Zella Rosie Meade, Gabrielle Christopher, Alex Pybus, Eleanor Knoblauch, Connely Colbourne, River Andrews, Tia Dunnah, Laquanda Isaac & Jolie McDonald.

The artwork submitted by Adante Lake will be used as the signboard welcoming visitors to English Harbour in 2016-2017.

The winner of the Peoples Choice Award conducted on Facebook was 13 year old Nicholas Southwell, of Seaview Farm Primary with a total of 576 likes. Prizes this year for each category winner will include one ticket aboard LIAT, the Caribbean Airline.  Prizes for the runner-ups include stationery from Harper’s Office Depot, Official Antigua Sailing Week hats from merchandise sponsor Gill North America, gifts from Colombian Emeralds and vouchers from Big Banana.

The Prize Giving Ceremony will be held at 2:00 pm on Dockyard Day on Saturday,  April 30th, 2016 on the main stage.
