HOTTING UP IN ANTIGUA Thursday 21st April 2011
With just a few days to go until the 44th Antigua Sailing Week, English and Falmouth Harbour is filling up with yachts of all shapes and sizes.
Dockside the air is filled with the sound of different accents from across the globe, including the Ron McKenzie and his crew racing on First 40.7, Lancelot. “All of us come form Vancouver, Canada. It has been a long trip to get here, over 4000 miles but Antigua is a great place to come and sail and Sailing Week is legendary.” Commented Lancelot crewmember, Kevin Jeannotte. However, the Canadian sailors are not the most distant visitors to Antigua Sailing Week. Lenjohn van der Wel’s Class 40, Ocean Warrior originally started their journey to Antigua from Cape Town, South Africa, over 6000 miles away.
Last night, over 100 volunteers met to discuss final preparations for the event. The eager team led by Alison Sly-Adams will be on hand throughout Antigua Sailing Week, to ensure that all of the visitors are well informed and have an enjoyable experience in Antigua. Their distinctive blue SWAT (Sailing Week Antigua Team) shirts will be a familiar sight throughout the event.
“The team is a vital source of information for all of the guests and competitors at Antigua Sailing Week.” Commented Alison Sly-Adams. “ We have also produced a free newspaper in association The Daily Observer called Enjoy! It is packed with information about events and attractions during Sailing Week, including the race schedule, where to watch the racing, the parties and much more.”
Approximately 10,000 copies of the free twenty-page newspaper Enjoy! Have been printed for Antigua Sailing Week
The all week party schedule starts on Saturday night with a welcome party at The Beer Tent in English Harbour, which is already being dubbed ‘Big Top’. With a ceiling height of over ten metres and the floor space of two tennis courts, The Beer Tent will be party-central all week.
