ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF ITS OCEAN SERIES Monday 7th February 2011
The organisers of Antigua Sailing Week have been working tirelessly in an effort to come up with a formula for the popular Ocean Series that will make it more attractive and interesting for entrants than in previous years.
The format that has been decided upon is three races in tandem with Antigua Sailing Week but on separate courses designed specifically for the Ocean Series. Each course will be approximately 50 nautical miles in length and will offer exciting ocean racing on the south coast and around the island of Antigua.
The first race of the Series will take place on the opening day of Antigua Sailing Week, Sunday, April 24. It will consist of the Yachting World Around the Island Race which will take competitors counter-clockwise around Antigua. Entrants vie for the coveted Yachting World Trophy each year while making every effort to break the existing elapsed time record, held in past years by the likes of Peter Harrison’s 115-foot ketch, Sojana.
The second race of the Series will take place on Tuesday, April 26 and will be a south coast race that will take competitors from the Half Moon mark east of Antigua in the Atlantic Ocean to the Outer Curtains mark west of Cades Reef. This will be a fabulous opportunity for spectators to glimpse participants of the Ocean Series racing on the same waters as the other participants of Antigua Sailing Week.
The third and final race will take place on Thursday, April 28 and will be another race around Antigua, this time in a clockwise direction. History has proven that circumnavigating Antigua in each different direction has its unique challenges so competitors will not have a dull moment navigating this time in the opposite direction to the first day’s racing.
Prize-giving for the Ocean Series as well as the rest of Antigua Sailing Week will take place on Friday evening, April 29 in the Event Village.
Online entries are now open for the Ocean Series and the final version of the Notice of Race will be available online by the end of this week. Current entries include the new 66-foot Gunboat, Phaedo, as well as last year’s Ocean Series corrected-time winner Lee Overlay Partners. Be sure to get your entry in early so other yachts can start preparing for the competition.
