DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PLANNING AND RESPONSE IN THE NELSON’S DOCKYARD
Wednesday 4th August 2010

When hurricanes threaten our islands, our first response is usually to our homes and families.  Historical sites that are government owned are often forgotten and neglected; left to the elements and luck.  But in the Nelson’s Dockyard, things are different.

The dockyard is a living community and home to many sailors, their families and guests staying in the various hotels.  The NPA’s hurricane plans are now being reviewed and upgraded.
The review committee includes members of the yachting community, English Harbour village residents, members of the business community and NPA management.

An inspection of the buildings in the Dockyard during the review have now led to the cancellation of their use as hurricane shelters for they lack the structural integrity and reinforcing in comparison to modern buildings and approved shelters.  Information will be posted to the public in the next newsletter noting new regulations and policies.  The review will also include earthquake, fire and other potential threats to the Nelson’s Dockyard and surrounding historical and residential areas.  The committee will also investigate ways of managing and improving the ad hoc system used by yachtsmen for securing their yachts in English Harbour and its the mangroves.
