ANTIGUA YACHT CLUB 12TH ANNUAL LASER OPEN Thursday 14th March 2013

Antigua Yacht Club’s 12th Annual Laser Open Regatta was held on the weekend of the 9TH & 10TH March 2013.
Having experienced fresh tradewind conditions in Antigua since December, this particular weekend saw lighter winds at approximately 4 – 10 knots. Although these were not ideal sailing conditions for most of the competitors and some entrants did, in fact, cancel due to the forecast, the event still achieved a fleet of 13 boats on the water.
Five races on Saturday ended with Karl James in the lead, followed by Rhone Findlay (St. Maarten) in second place and Luke Deegan (S/Y Sojana) in third place. Second and third places were only separated by one point.
Amongst the juniors, Rhone Findlay (age 16) was very impressive, and was closely followed by Lewis Fitzgerald (age 15) and Rhone Kirby (age 14).
1st place winner Karl James (centre), 2nd place Rhone Findlay (left) and 3rd place Luke Deegan (right).
After a further two races on Sunday morning, when the breeze did freshen a little, the positions remained unchanged leaving Karl James the overall winner for the 11th time out of the event’s 12-year history.
The Club would like to thank Tony Maidment, Anne Morcom, and Chris Martin for their help with the Regatta.
