AYC SPORT 16 MASTERS REGATTA Tuesday 18th October 2011
The first Sport 16 Masters Regatta was held at Antigua Yacht Club on Sunday 16th October 2011.
Carlo and Paola on the start line.
It was a glorious sunny day with 12 to 14 knots of breeze – these perfect conditions saw a fleet of six boats with two-person crews take to the water. Amongst the 12 sailors were four Olympians so competition was expected to be keen. All sailors had to be 50+ years of age.
After three races in the morning session the leader was Carlo Falcone and his partner Paola Vittoria – both Olympians. A convivial picnic lunch was enjoyed by all on the AYC lawn followed by three more races in the afternoon session. Carlo and Paola managed to hold onto their lead to receive the champion boat trophy. In second place were Karen Portch and Julian Gildersleeve, ahead of Franklyn Braithwaite and Chris Martin in third. In fourth place were Bernie Wong and George Bridger and in fifth were Chris Chitty and Tony Sayer. Steve Spanis and Tristan Greensmith retired after the morning session and their boat was taken by Geoffrey Pidduck and Janie Easton for the afternoon session.
Franklyn Braithwaite and Chris Martin accepting their bottle of rum!
The general consensus was that this was great fun and it should be repeated in the not too distant future. Thanks to all who participated – it wouldn’t have been a success without you!
