SLMBC MARKS MATERNAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY Thursday 23rd January 2025
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, January 22, 2025 — Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) is proud to join the global community in recognizing Maternal Health Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of maternal health and the well-being of mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period. The day highlights the ongoing need to improve healthcare for women, reduce maternal mortality, and promote healthy pregnancies and births.

At SLBMC, the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department and the Maternity Department work tirelessly to provide high-quality care to mothers and babies, with a focus on promoting safe deliveries, providing prenatal education, and addressing the various challenges that can impact maternal health.
Dr. Nicole Roberts, Chair of SLBMC’s Obstetrics & Gynecology Department, emphasized the importance of Maternal Health Awareness Day:
“Maternal health is a cornerstone of a healthy society, and today we take the time to reflect on the strides we’ve made and the work still to be done. We are committed to ensuring that all mothers in our care receive the best possible treatment, support, and education throughout their pregnancies and beyond. By raising awareness, we not only help save lives but also empower women to take charge of their health, making informed choices for themselves and their families.”
Ann-Marie Browne-Isaac, Nurse Manager of SLBMC’s Maternity Department and Outpatient Clinic and Chair of the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission committee, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the role of healthcare providers in supporting maternal health:
“Maternal Health Awareness Day is a reminder of the vital role that quality care plays in the well-being of mothers and their babies. We, as a team, work together to provide comprehensive, compassionate care that addresses both physical and emotional needs. It is important to continue educating women about healthy pregnancies, the importance of regular check-ups, and the support systems available to them. Our goal is to ensure that every mother feels valued, safe, and cared for during one of the most significant times in her life.”
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our dedicated Obstetrics & Gynecology team”, said Salma Crump, SLBMC Head of Marketing & Communications. “Childbirth is a special and emotional experience, and for most mothers, it’s a time when they come in with anticipation and hope, expecting to leave with joy.
At SLBMC, we witness this multiple times every day but achieving this requires a seamless collaboration of many moving parts. It’s a true reflection of the skill, expertise, and training of our team. We are proud of our progress in maternal health outcomes here at the hospital, but we are well aware that we must continue to do more—because every mother deserves the opportunity for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. We remain committed to making that a reality for all.”
The observance of Maternal Health Awareness Day aligns with SLBMC’s ongoing commitment to improving maternal health outcomes and providing essential care and resources to families in Antigua and Barbuda. The hospital’s dedication to maternal health extends beyond today’s observance, with a focus on continuous education, preventive care, and support for women at all stages of motherhood.
