SIGN THE PETITION TO SAVE ANTIGUA & BARBUDA’S CORAL REEFS Thursday 21st June 2012
Petition: Take action now to save Antigua & Barbuda's coral reefs
The state of Antigua’s environment and economy are at risk, now more than ever, as there are no regulations in place to control fisheries and marine sustainability in our waters. The Antigua Conservation Society is making strides to raise awareness and frustration, in order to push for the Fisheries Act 2004 to be signed and put into place. Currently, our waters, reefs and marine life are under threat from poor fishing practices and management and we are at risk of wiping out completely the Parrotfish (locally called Chub Fish), who take care of our reefs, eating algae that will otherwise suffocate and kill the reef. This species of fish consumes small amounts of the reef in their cleaning, and therefore a mature parrotfish is responsible for producing up to 180 lbs of sand each year through crunching up bits of the reef. The Chub Fish is just one of many marine species we need to look after here in Antigua; among other issues, the Act will allow for a closed season for Lobster, as well as make seasonal killing of the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle illegal.
To help save our marine environment so it has a chance to recover, please sign this petition in hopes that we can force the 2004 Fisheries Act to finally be signed, and we can preserve our underwater paradise for generations to come.
