CONSULTANTS COMMENCE WORK ON THE ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT PLAN Friday 30th March 2012
Strides are being made towards the preparation of a Sustainable Tourism Development Plan (STDP) which will be used to develop guidelines for the future enhancement of Antigua and Barbuda as a tourist destination.
The Government has secured the professional services of consultants OBMI and T&L Europraxis to partner on this project to deliver the STDP and all related master planning, business planning and negotiations.
The team met on Friday of last week with Tourism Minister the Hon. John Maginley and with the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday.
The plan will be based on three main values which are economic, environmental and social. These values will aid in the development of long term sustainable projects, by maximizing the results for investors, respecting and preserving the natural beauty of the allocated site and providing a unique experience to visitors and locals.
Commenting on the importance of creating the STDP Minister Maginley stated that, “The Strategic Tourism Development Plan is critical to the future development of our hotel plant and will guide future investment in the hotel sector. The plan will also seek to attract Foreign Direct Investment into Antigua and Barbuda by creating opportunities that have been carefully planned”.
Most importantly as summarized by Director of Policy and Planning within the Ministry of Tourism Mr. Cortwright Marshall, “the STDP will provide us with the necessary platform which will ensure the continuous growth of the industry.
According to the project outline presented by consultants, the approach is to work along with multiple key stakeholders to define and design the most adequate National Sustainable Tourism Plan for the country.
