ROTARY CLUB INDUCTS NEW MEMBERS Friday 16th November 2012

At Wednesday’s regular Rotary meeting, two new members were inducted and transferred to the Rotary Club of Antigua membership.
Rene Williams, the Corporate Secretary of the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority was added and transferred from the Rotary Club of Barbados, Gordon Julian, the current country manager for the Bank of Nova Scoti, marking the two most recent additions to the Rotary family.
"Both men got a good reception and pledged to serve the club with distinction and assist wherever they are asked to function in the club.
President of the Diabetes Association, Nurse Juanita James, addressed the Rotary. World Diabetes Day was celebrated on 14th November 2012, and as part of the awareness, the Rotary Club of Antigua decided to have Nurse James as its guest. It was quite fitting, as we here in Antigua have many cases of diabetes, some of which are undetected, and the whole idea is to bring about changes in the way we live, they way we eat, and education for prolonged life and understanding of the disease.
Nurse James expounded on the fact that there is an increase of diabetes in children and that could be the very reason why parents should get their children more involved in physical activities such as exercise, walks, jogging and diet.
Children today, she noted, "are more involved in sedentary games and relaxation" and this could be the cause of obesity.
She underscores that adhering to the call for better health, diet and physical activity will give us a renewal charge on longer life.
While at the meeting, Nurse James thanked the Rotary Club of Antigua for partnering with the diabetic foot care program, which has been helpful in testing and care of patients suffering from diabetes.
Kudos go to fellow Rotarians Dr Sharon Cordner-Georges and Rotarian Cordell Josiah for their assistance. Cordell Josiah promised the program a cheque in the amount of US$2000 for further assistance.
Nurse James was presented with a 40th anniversary commemoration gift by Past President Arthur Thomas for speaking to the Club."
