SIR VIV DONATES PRIZED BATS TO ROTARY Thursday 9th August 2012
Sir Vivian Richards, rated as one of top five batsmen in world cricket, handed over one each of his Knights of World Cricket and Knights of Caribbean Cricket bats to Rotary President Philip Harris, last week, during a short ceremony at the club’s monthly meeting at the City View Hotel.
The donation is to assist the charity organisation in its effort to raise funds for community projects. The bats are among a priceless collection of Sir Viv’s memorabilia. The Knights of World Cricket bat is autographed by former great England all-rounder Sir Ian Botham, former great New Zealander Sir Richard Hadlee, and Sir Vivian.
The Knights of Caribbean Cricket bat bears the signatures of Sir Garfield Sorbers, who celebrated his 76th birthday last week, Sir Everton Weekes, and Sir Vivian. The bats, which will be auctioned, are expected to fetch a substantial sum with bidding likely to start at US $5,000.
“Knowing the memorabilia factor, these (bats) could help you raise substantial funds for your project,” the former West Indies captain and master batsman told Harris as he presented the bats. “We have a concept with the Sirs of cricket,” Sir Vivian told the Rotary meeting. “We have travelled the world and seen how charity events are done. It is wonderful -- the work that Rotary has been doing in Antigua & Barbuda.”
Harris thanked Sir Vivian for his timely donation and expressed the view that the Rotary Club will seek to derive maximum benefits from the gifts in order to serve the community.
