Day 3 XXII Copa Merengue
Team Antigua took a downward spiral today; feedback from team Captain Erica Williams indicates that the team is in good spirits as the level of competition received in this grade 4 tournament can be viewed as a life lesson for the team.
Day 3 started on an early note as the XXII Copa Merengue under 18 competitors stepped onto the hard courts on East Park Tennis Centre. D’Jeri Raymond was first on court; Raymond came up against Mexican D. Rodriguez Sampieri, who got the better of Raymond defeating her in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Next on court was Noah Peters also playing in the girls U18 singles competition. Peters played here head to head against Guatemalan Rebeca Reyes; Reyes defeated Peters 6-1, 6-0
In the doubles competition Raymond has teamed up with A. Alcerro Lopez of Honduras to contest the girls’ doubles main draw scheduled for late Tuesday afternoon.
In the boys under 14 competition, Justin Marcano completed his final round robin competition against Nick Hardt; Hardt got the better of Marcano who lost 4-0, 4-0 this clinched Marcano’s position, landing him in the Consolation draw. After all the scores were compiled Cordell Williams Jr. too spot was secured.
In the consolation draw as the #2 seed; Of the 39 boys only 16 secured main
draw spots.
In his round one (consol draw) match, Justin Marcano was ousted in the singles competition with his loss against Rene Cano Valladares of Honduras 4-0, 4-0.
On Tuesday Cordell Williams is scheduled to contest the second round of the consolation draw after receiving a first round BYE. Williams has also teamed up with Justin Marcano for the doubles competition.
