OLD ROAD FUND TENNIS 10S JUNIOR TOURNAMENT RESULTS
Monday 18th February 2013

The Old Road Fund (Curtain Bluff) in collaboration with the Antigua & Barbuda Tennis Association hosted its inaugural junior tournament; the tournament kicked off with the Hon. W. Baldwin Spencer and Hotel manager Robert Sherman hitting the first ball to declare the tournament open.

(The Hon. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer)

The tournament featured two categories – red ball and orange ball.

Red Ball Tournament

Six boys and six girls secured main draw positions but only two were declared winners.  In the boys competition Charles Green (Old road fund / Grace Christian Academy) got the better of Jahmal Roberts (St. John’s Lutheran) defeating him 7-0 declaring him the boys Red Ball Champion.

The girls competition saw Makaila Irish (Old Road fund/)Island Academy) taking out Gabrielle Whitlock (Halcyon Tennis Club/Kids Unlimited) 7-2 declaring her the girls Red Ball Champion.

Encouragement is the name of the game and as such  consolation matches were played.

Red Ball Consolation

Boys consolation winner Giles Dejager (Island Academy) winner over Korie Jackson( Old Road Fund/Old road primary) 7-5; Girls consolation winner D’Andrea Joseph (Old Road Fund/Island Academy) defeated Rheanna Evanson (Halcyon Tennis/Sunny Side Tutorial) 7-4.

Orange Ball Tournament

Seth Joseph and Ashley Bersma declared Orange ball champions.

This is where our juniors were tested as they came up against their peers in a battle of wills. Seth Joseph (St. Nicholas Primary) came up against a worthy adversary Aron Fields ( Halcyon Tennis/St. Andrews Primary) defeating him 4-2. The final match of the girls competition was truly a battle of wills as Ashley Berma( Halcyon Tennis /St. Nicholas Primary)took Aayana Evanson ( Halcyon Tennis/Sunny Side Tutorial ) to  4 all defeating Aayana in the tie break 7-4

None of this would have been possible without the help of our sponsors (Pinehill, Columbian Emeralds and Old Road Fund), our volunteers and our officials.

The level of play observed here today tells us that tennis is on the rise and we trust
that corporate Antigua will continue to support events such as these.

One more tournament left for February..... The ABTA will be hosting a
Girls 16 & Under Open on Saturday 23rdFeb, 2013 at Halcyon by Rex Resort.
Your support is needed to make this tournament a success, come on out and support
our girls.
