WILLIAMS SECURED 5TH PLACE IN CARIBBEAN DEVELOPMENT CHAMPIONSHIPS Monday 3rd September 2012
Cordell Williams Jr. secured 5th place at the 2012 13 & under Caribbean Development Championships, a major improvement from last year’s competition where he placed 10th.
After defeating Shivar Ramkalup of Suriname in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 ; a worthy adversary whom he met earlier this summer at the Junior International Tennis Champions (JITIC) in El Salvador where Ramkalup defeated Cordell Jr.
Though Antigua & Barbuda lost their 2011 3rd place position, placing 8th out of 10 countries.
It can be said that there was significant development in the game of these players. After a long summer being on tour for the past 8th weeks we can be sure that the development we have seen in 2012 will show fruit in 2013.
The eventual winners of the singles competition was Anjali Ramhit of Suriname who took the girls singles title and Patrick Sydow of Aruba who took the boys singles title; with Suriname the overall team winners.
Our juniors continue to make their presence felt in a country where cricket and football are king. We continue to encourage our athletes with their development and trust that they will prepare for 2013 team competitions which will include Jr. Davis and Fed Cup, World team Jr, JITIC and 12 & Under Wilson cup which in 2013 replaces the 13 & Under Caribbean Development Championships.
Our National Junior Development program thanks all who have supported us thus far in 2012 as the tennis season is not over. The National Olympic Committee who assisted with the junior summer tour, JITIC and 13 and Under Caribbean Development Championships; The Caribbean Union Bank the official sponsor of the 12 & Under Wilson Cup team and also Athletes Foots (Wilson agent) official team uniform sponsor; Caribbean Alliance and Harney Motors who came on board to assist and finally Seaboard Marine who assisted Kyle Joseph and Raeburn’s Generator Services who assisted D’Jeri Raymond.
Without the assistance of these corporate sponsors our athletes would never see the fruits of their labour. We also thank Mrs. Erica Williams who took the time out to travel with these juniors being mom, coach, mentor and friend; finally to the PARENTS thank you for understanding the child’s dream and purpose.
