SVG ITF JR. INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT COMMENCES Monday 13th August 2012
The First Citizens investment services sponsored SVG ITF Jr. International Tournament commenced Saturday with the tournaments qualifying round both in the under 14 and under 18 category.
The tournament drew an athlete head count of 113 athletes competiting for SVG ITF title in all age categories from all corners of the globe to include, Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Barbados, Bahamas, Czechoslovakia, Canada, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Greneda, Guatemala, Guyana, Great Britian, Korea, Mexico, Nicaragua, St. Lucia, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, United States, Venezula and host country St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
Much success came for team Antigua & Barbuda as two out of three under 14 athletes have secured main draw spots, with Jessica Isaac entering the girls under 14 main draw as the #1 seed.
The round robin competition was fierce and Jessica Isaac easily overcame her opponents. In her first match Isaac defeated Chelsea Haslam of St. Vincent 4-1, 4-0; match two also show Isaac's proness as she made an easy match of Luk Lyttle (VIN)defeating her 4-0, 4-2.
The boys round robin competition matched Cordell Williams jr against veteran Aaron Soo Ping Chow (TRI). Soo Ping Chow quickly overcame Cordell jr in straight sets defeating him 4-1, 4-0 ,however Cordell jr easily bounced back taking down Amel Horne of St. Vincent 4-0, 4-1. This match easily singed Cordell williams jr spot in the main draw.
Team mate Justice Christopher was not as lucky, Christopher lost both his qualifying matches. In match 1 Christopher too came up against a veteran under 14 player Nabeel Mohammed (TRI) losing 0-4, 1-4; in his second match Christopher lost to Djeante simmons (VIN) 1-4, 0-4. Justice now moves on to the consolation draw.
As the official start of the SVG ITF Jr. International Tournament commences tomorrow (13 Aug 2012) all main draw matches both under 14 Cotecc and under 18 junior tour will see our athletes on the courts of St. Vincents National Tennis Centre.
In Round 1 of the under 18 competition:
Shakir Elvin will come up against Kevin Huggins (VIN)
D'Jeri Raymond will meet Amanda Soo Ping Chow (TRI)
Jody Maginley the boys #4 seed will battle Jose Olivaires (DOM)
In Round 1 of the under 14 competition:
Jessica Isaac will compete against Denee Lyttle (VINV)
Cordell Williams jr will meet Tjimon Louisy (LCA)
Justice Christopher who secured the #4 seed position in the consolation draw received a BYE into round 2 and will not play tomorrow.
