13 AND UNDER DEVELOPMENT CHAMPIONS TENNIS TEAM SELECTED
Wednesday 24th August 2011

 Jevannie Ambrose
Antigua and Barbuda's junior tennis titans wind down the summer season with spots in the skill building Thirteen (13) and Under Development Championships.

Making the trip to Suriname will be 13-year-old D’Jeri Raymond, currently the number one ranked player Under 14 in COTECC (Confederation of Tennis in Central America and the Caribbean); 13-year-old Jevannie Ambrose; and 11-year-old Cordell Williams - all of whom have had a busy summer playing tournaments across the region, including the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, the Dutch Caribbean countries, Tobago, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent. Accompanying the players will be captain and coach David Jerry Williams and chaperone Alice Williams.

They will be flying the Antigua and Barbuda flag alongside teams from Aruba, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Haiti, Guyana, the Netherland Antilles, Suriname, the United States Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada, Jamaica and host country Suriname.
Raymond and Ambrose are no novices to this tournament. Both represented Antigua at last Year’s tournament held in Curacao with Raymond placing 6th out of 19 girls and Ambrose placing 11th   out of 26 boys in their respective competitions, and Antigua placing 9th among the fourteen (14) participating countries.

It'll be Williams Jr.'s first appearance at the Development Championships.  The top U13 athletes from each country are usually selected to represent at this event, with personal improvement and national glory among the overarching goals. Antigua and Barbuda last claimed the prize in 2008.

As it applauds the successes,  as well as the hard fought battles and solid sportsmanship, even in defeat, of these and other juniors during the summer tournament season, the  Antigua and Barbuda Tennis Association urges all parents and guardians to involve their students in some sporting - or other character and skill building extracurricular activity - at an early age.  Sporting activities in particular have the added benefit of keeping them healthy and driven, with potential spillover into their academic and social life. From our junior tennis athletes, who have to juggle their academic pursuits with academic consistency and other childhood endeavors, their peers can learn the value of goal setting and time management; and, most important of all, balance.

We say thanks to the corporate community for their support of the Association and of individual athletes; in particular, this season ...
