ROTARY CLUB OF ANTIGUA'S MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAMME Wednesday 8th April 2015
Hunger affects more than 800 million people worldwide, according to the United Nations World Food programme, and one-third of all the food grown every year goes to waste. In 2008, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported that “in Latin America and the Caribbean, more than 52 million people -- 10 percent of the region's population -- suffer from malnutrition or hunger” (http://www.fao.org).
Locally, the Rotary Club of Antigua has been doing its part through its monthly Meals on Wheels programme; the longest running service project, spanning 40 years. Rotarians gather on the last Saturday in each month, pack and distribute 100 food packages to deprived senior citizens and families within the community. This programme is funded by the Club’s fundraising activities, primarily that being the annual Colours fete, and via contributions made by individuals and Corporate Antigua.
The Rotary Club of Antigua wishes to extend its sincerest gratitude to ABI Insurance Company Ltd. for sponsoring the Rotary Club of Antigua Meals on Wheels programme on March 28th, 2015. This is the second time ABII has sponsored this monthly initiative. ABII staff assisted Rotarians in packaging food items for distribution. ABI Insurance continues to demonstrate its commitment to participate responsibly in the socio-cultural development of the community.
