CRICKET IN ANTIGUA
The game of Cricket in Antigua is more of a religion than a mere sport. Arriving here with the British, cricket has been claimed by the region as one of its major passions in life.
You are as likely to come across an excellent game on a village green or a beach, as an International Match at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium which officially opened its doors in March 2007 ready for the super 8’s leg of the ICC Cricket World Cup Tournament held right across the Caribbean.
Antigua has created some exceptional cricketers in its Cricketing history – worthy of particular note are Sir Vivian Richards who ruled the world as best batsman for 10 years and was the former captain of the Windies Team, and fast bowler Andy Roberts. Later stars are Curtly Ambrose, Richie Richardson and Ridley Jacobs.
If you are a cricket fan – and in fact even if you are not – a day of cricket is a brilliant way to view Antigua culture first hand – the excitement and energy that surround the game is fantastic fun and the whole island is literally bouncing when cricket is in town.
