ASW LAY DAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LIBERTA CRICKET GROUNDS
Monday 16th April 2012

The Antigua Sailing Week Committee is pleased to announce that former West Indies cricketer Kenneth Benjamin is throwing the full weight of the Liberta Sports Club behind Sailing Week 2012, scheduled to run from April 29 – May 4.

Benjamin, who has been a driving force behind the construction of a pavilion and community centre at the Liberta playfield, will be organising a beach cricket activity during the Lay Day activities of Sailing Week this year.

The beach cricket will be used as a fund-raiser where both members of the local community and sailors alike will be encouraged to contribute to the worthwhile project in a community that has produced many of Antigua’s cricket stars, Benjamin included.

Lay Day will be held on Wednesday, May 3, on Pigeon Point Beach. It is the one day during the annual regatta where there is no racing for the sailors and they get the chance to relax and enjoy the excellent Antiguan hospitality.

The former West Indian fast bowler, who is also president of the Liberta Sports Club, said interested persons can get in touch with him at 785-0353 to register teams or for how they can take part or contribute in general to the ongoing project.

Benjamin also credited the parent of one of the children who is involved in the Liberta Sports Club’s youth programme for coming up with the idea.

He is delighted that Antigua Sailing Week can make it possible for community projects to benefit in tangible ways from the hosting of such a prestigious and international event.

Says Alison Sly-Adams committee member, “Antigua Sailing Week is for all of us. On the water, the sailors both locally and internationally love the perfect racing conditions. Back on dry land is the time for the nation to come together with the visitors to have a fantastic week of fun. We want the event to impact the community positively and we are happy that we can do just that by supporting the Liberta Sports Club and its fund-raising programme in a way that will such great fun.”

The event has also adopted the National Sailing Academy as its official charity. Races where academy sailors and Antigua Sailing Week participants will race together also take place on Lay Day and will give the children a racing experience as well as raise awareness about the academy and some funds for its future development.
