Disabled Peoples' International
North America and the Caribbean (DPI NAC) is a network of
national assemblies or organizations of disabled people
established to promote the human rights of disabled people
through full participation, equalization of opportunities and
development. The goals of
DPI NAC are to:
- Promote the human rights of
persons with disabilities
- Promote economic and social
integration of persons with disabilities
- Develop and support
organizations of disabled persons within our region and to
share information and knowledge with others at the world level
|
 |
|
The DPI NAC Regional Development
Office is located here in the lovely twin-island nation of
Antigua and Barbuda, nestled in the rural village of Potters.
In accordance with the abovementioned goals, we support efforts
by regional organizations to educate the public about
disability-related issues and to promote the regional disability
rights movement.
|
|
Currently, DPI NAC carries out this
mandate through full and associate member organizations in
Antigua and Barbuda; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Canada;
Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Jamaica; St. Kitts and Nevis; St.
Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; and
United States of America. |
|
One of our primary projects is
lobbying the government of Antigua and Barbuda, and in fact all
governments throughout the Caribbean, to ratify and implement
the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
This expansive human rights treaty ensures that persons with
disabilities have equal access to many areas which have been
routinely and systematically denied to them, including: |
- Receiving an education
- Moving around freely
- Living independently in the
community
- Getting jobs, even when well
qualified
- Accessing information
- Obtaining proper health care
- Exercising political rights,
such as voting
- Making their own decisions
- “Fitting in” and being
accepted

Please join us and our fellow
disability advocacy organizations in our quest to educate the
public and our governments about the importance and benefits of
respecting and empowering persons with disabilities. |
