Antigua Amphibians: Toad
Antigua Amphibians:
TOAD
Buffo marinus

This large toad of about 8 inches and weighing nearly 2 lbs cannot be missed by this size and by its distinctive call. It is an introduced species supposed to deal with vermin in agricultural fields as they feed on insects. Beetles and ants are the favourites.

These toads are common at certain localities in and after damp weather and near ponds. They dry out easily and search for dark places during the day, even visiting houses. Quite often they may be seen cooling off in the dog’s drinking water!
