Sun protection
- it is easy to think that because the wind is flowing through
your hair, and you don't
feel hot, that you are not at risk from sun burn. Be VERY
CAREFUL - the sun is HOT and
with the
addition of the reflection from the water it is very easy to get
sunburnt while sailing.
Where possible sit in the shade, and in particular ensure that
you re-apply your sunscreen at regular intervals throughout the
day. |

Drink plenty of water
- it is easy to dehydrate due to the amount of sweating you will
do , particularly
if you are active, and also from the effect of the wind. If you
feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
Be sure to top up your water levels regularly throughout the
day, and keep alcohol levels to a minimum.
If you do drink - keep topping up with water in between. You
will be amazed at how much better you feel. |

Wear a hat
- it is easy to be over-exposed to the sun, but wearing a hat
will help prevent heatstroke.
If you do feel any symptoms( headaches, feeling flushed and
feverish or dizzy), lie in the shade and drink lots of water. |

Listen to your captain and crew
- If the Captain tells you that the water is too shallow to jump
into, or there is a reef near you then listen to him - he knows
what he is talking about, and by following his instructions, you
will ensure that your time aboard is safe and enjoyable. |

Smokers
- do not throw cigarette ends overboard - Fish will try to eat
them, and in some cases they can be poisoned - be
environmentally aware, and put your cigarette ends in the ash
tray where they belong.
Similarly do not throw any litter overboard. |
